Project Profile

Caltech Solar Project

Overview

Solar Power Partners (SPP) developed the first solar energy system for the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and the largest solar energy facility for the City of Pasadena using a solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The system, located on top of one of the school’s parking structures, will produce an estimated 341,669 kWh in its first year of operation.

Results

The system was the first solar implementation for this leading college. CalTech expects to save approximately $13 million in electricity costs over the 20-year term and offset 62,175 metric tons of carbon dioxide. In addition, the project provided an excellent impetus for students to embark on smaller campus projects.

" SPP’s experience making solar power attainable for schools and universities makes for a great long-term partnership. This economic means of gaining solar energy for the campus is part of Caltech’s focus on sustainability and renewable energy. It saves money, fosters awareness, reduces the Institute’s environmental impact, and provides environment stewardship."
